January 11, 1983: Major-General Peter Mwagiru Kariuki (Right) former Commander of the disbanded Kenya Air Force (KAF) is charged with failing to prevent and suppress a mutiny on August 1, 1982. He denied the charges. Mr. Kariuki appeared before a panel presided by an Army Major-General assisted by four senior military officers and a judge. The Commander of the Army, Lt.-Gen. John Malan Sawe, told the court martial at Lang’ata Barracks that he had informed Maj.-Gen. Kariuki to contact the Department of Defence in the early hours of the August 1 coup attempt. He said he informed him soon after he (Sawe) had learnt of the rebellion by members of the Air Force at about 3a.m. In this photo, Major-General Kariuki seen in talks with India’s Chief Air Marshall I.
