Description

September 17, 1965: The multi-million-pound military barracks at Kahawa, near Nairobi, one time pride of the British Army in pre-independence Kenya is formally handed over to President Kenyatta by the British High Commissioner, Mr. Malcolm MacDonald (right/ as a gift to the Nation. The ceremony also marked the conversion of what Mr. MacDonald termed as being until recently a “fortress of colonialism” into Kenyatta College, one of the biggest educational centers in the country. Mr. Kenyatta thanked the British Government for handing over the buildings to the Kenya people and said the ceremony they were attending saw the conversion of a colonial military installation into a national educational institution for the education of our children. And he said that since the country had seen it fit to honor him by giving his name to the institution, he would take a close personal interest in its development and achievements because no one liked his name to be taken in vain. Here, British High Commissioner to Kenya, Mr. Malcom MacDonald (right) presenting his credentials president Jomo Kenyatta at State House.
