Description

Garsen MP and Narc-Kenya Secretary General Danson Mungatana addresses participants during a two-day conference on Business and Human Rights at the Hemingways Hotel in Watamu. On Wednesday, January 26, 2011, Mungatana called upon the Ministry of Trade and Industry to review existing commercial laws to better protect the rights of workers and small-scale traders. He proposed the introduction of a new bill in Parliament that would hold corporations more accountable for human rights violations and ensure that economic growth does not come at the expense of fundamental liberties. The conference, organized by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), MUHURI, and the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), also featured remarks from Olatokunbo Ige, the Senior UN Human Rights Adviser. Ige highlighted that while Kenya’s new Constitution provided a strong framework for rights, the private sector remained a “blind spot” where labor exploitation often went unchecked. Mungatana emphasized that for Kenya to achieve its Vision 2030 goals, businesses must operate with a “human face,” respecting the dignity of their employees as a prerequisite for doing business in the country.
