March 12, 1964: Field Marshall Mwariama (right) the first top-level Mau Mau leader to surrender to the Government under the last December’s Uhuru amnesty is jailed for five years by a Meru magistrate. He was earlier convicted of being in possession of offensive weapons, obstructing a police officer and of disorderly conduct in a police station. Outside the court a crowd estimated at 900 waited to see Mr. Mwariama. Thirty policemen in riot kit stood by, but there were no incidents. Mwariama, his hair hanging to his shoulders in ringlets, emerged after his sentence, He waved to the crowd and told them they should remain calm and not worry or Interfere with the Government. He said he would appeal against his sentence. Mwariama was arrested by Meru police on February 23 and charged with 14 others with hoIding an allegedly unlawful meeting. He was taken to Muthara Police station. He is seen here with Mzee Jomo Kenyatta in December 1963.
