March 13, 1991: Former Vice-President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga (Left) tries to register his political party but receives a letter of rejection only moments after he presented his application papers to the Registrar-General. The Registrar-General, Mr. Joseph N. King’arui confirmed receipt of Mr. Odinga’s application and advised him that “I Have summarily refused to register the proposed political party because such registration would be in contravention of Section 2A of the Constitution of Kenya which provides that “there shall be in Kenya only one party, the Kenya African National Union” Mr. Odinga, 80, had said in his application that his National Democratic Party, whose launch he announced last month. Here, Mr. Oginga addresses a press conference at his Agip office, Nairobi, accompanied by Mr. Ramadhan Mohamed Mwanguno, treasurer of the proposed NDP in November 1991.
