Description

Kakamega Senator Dr. Boni Khalwale and Ikolomani MP Bernard Shinali differ sharply with political activist Stanley Livondo (center, seated). On Saturday, August 15, 2015, during the funeral service of the late teacher Vitalis Likami at Friends School Shiveye, the leaders clashed over the controversial trade agreement between Kenya and Uganda. The deal, which allegedly allowed for the importation of cheap Ugandan sugar, sparked an uproar among Western Kenya leaders. MP Shinali protested the move, stating that while he had not seen the formal document, the arrival of cheap imports would ruin the lives of Kakamega residents who depend on Mumias Sugar Company. Khalwale echoed these concerns, accusing the Jubilee government of signing a “death warrant” for the local sugar industry. In contrast, Livondo defended the government’s bilateral trade efforts, leading to a heated exchange before the mourners. The legislators maintained that protecting the local farmer must take precedence over any regional trade protocols that threaten the economic stability of the “sugar belt” region.
