June 20, 2001: Mr. Francis Ng’ang’a, (right) acting secretary-general since the death of long-serving Mr. Ambrose Adeya Adongo in March, is confirmed to the position and becomes the third chief executive of the union that was formed in 1957. The first secretary-general was Mr. Stephen Kioni, who lost in 1969. In with Mr. Ng’ang’a was Mr. John Katumanga, (center) who went in unopposed as the national chairman, as was Mr. Joseph Chirchir (first vice-national chairman). The election took place at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, Nairobi. The union polls have traditionally been held at Kisumu’s Tom Mboya Labour College. Also elected unopposed were the deputy secretary-general, Mr. Lawrence Majali, and the assistant secretary-general, Mr. David Okuta Osiany. Mr. Osiany, who has been the executive-secretary of the Nyando branch, was the sole candidate from Nyanza. The positions of the national treasurer and the assistant went to Mr. Peter Mutulu and Mr. Fred Ontere respectively, who were also unopposed.
