February 24, 1965: Mr. Pio Gama Pinto, a freedom fighter and a member of Kenya House of Representatives is shot dead in full view of his year-old youngest child, Tresca as he was driving away from his home at Westlands, Nairobi. Mr. Pinto, served several years in detention during the emergency years in Kenya, was an outspoken critic of colonialism and a staunch supporter of liberation movements in Africa. Here, Mr. Pinto’s funeral on February 26, 1965, attended by almost the entire cabinet. Those present included Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga (second from left), and Joseph Murumbi, Achieng’ Oneko, Dennis Akumu and Bildad Kaggia. Inset: Pio Gama Pinto
