With the aim of encouraging local rally drivers to compete in the East African Safari Rally, the organising committee introduced a new National Award, consisting of a bronze cheetah trophy and a cash prize of £500. The cheetah, symbolising the Safari emblem, was sculpted by renowned wildlife artist Rob Glen. The cast was prepared by Glen and transported to England for casting before being flown to Nairobi by British Caledonian Airways. Mrs. Julia Glen (right), the sculptor’s wife, and Mrs. Hazel Seal of British Caledonian Airways are pictured unpacking the trophy at the airline’s Nairobi office. Glen, who had entered the Safari in a Porsche with co-driver Roger Barnard, was forced to withdraw after sustaining injuries during a practice run but expressed optimism about returning to rallying later in the year.
