Description

December 17, 1991: Multi-party system is introduced in Kenya after President Daniel Moi gave his assent to the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill following the repeal of section 2(A) of the constitution a week earlier. This opened the way for registration of opposition parties and ended decades of single-party rule in Kenya. The Kenya African National Union (KANU) would no longer be the sole official political party. In this Photo, Leaders of opposition parties are seen after a meeting with the attorney general Amos Wako in Nairobi on June 4, 1992. They are from left Messrs., Mwai Kibaki and John Keen (DP), Johnstone Makau (SDP) and Martin Shikuku, George Nthenge and Oginga Odinga (FORD).
