Description

December 6, 1966: President Jomo Kenyatta names a senior British Army Officer Major-General Robert Bernard Penfold (inset) as Chief of Defense Staff of the Kenya Armed forces. Maj.-Gen. Penfold, who commanded the 6th Battalion of the King’s African Rifles from 1959 to 1961, was at the Imperial Defense College in London before arriving in Nairobi to accept the new appointment. He will act as an adviser under Dr. Njoroge Mungai Minister for Defense on all affairs of the Army, Air Force and Navy. Here, the former Chief of Defense Staff, Maj-Gen. R. B. Penfold, at State House, Nairobi, in May 1969 to say farewell to President Jomo Kenyatta. The President (left), in a jovial mood, shook hands warmly with the outgoing Major-General and wished him “good luck”. Dr Mungai looks on. Maj.-Gen. Penfold left Eastleigh Air Force Station after a large contingent of senior military officials saw him off on his way to Britain. He and his wife were flown to Mombasa where they boarded a ship for the UK.
