Description

April 1, 1968: Special Branch and uniformed police officers swoops on the private offices of Mr. Jaramogi Oginga Odinga (left in a beaded cap) in Nairobi’s city center and cordons off the immediate area to launch a search. The leader of the opposition Kenya People’s Union was personally searched by several policemen, who entered the offices at Regal Mansion on Government Road (Now Moi Avenue). Witnesses said arrests had been made, but Mr. Odinga himself later left the building and travelled to Parliament where he criticized the Government over proposed new legislation entitled the Public Order (Amendment) Bill which he claimed was aimed at destroying the opposition and steering Kenya to a one-party system. Police arrived at Regal Mansions shortly after 5:30Pm in a 999 car, a truck, a van and a GK car. Mr. Odinga later emerged from Regal Mansions House a few minutes before 6 Pm and said “They have searched my person and found nothing. They are now searching my office. I do not know what they are looking for. Here, Mr. Odinga is seen leaving his office after the search.
