March 22, 1987: The Reverend Dr. Timothy Murere Njoya (Right) the fiery Presbyterian clergyman announces he is retiring on the basis of conscience rather than denounce his beliefs. He claimed that his controversial sermons were what had led to the recent decision to transfer him from Nairobi to Nyeri. Dr. Njoya said he hoped a petition would be presented to the 1988 general assembly of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) to discuss fears which might influence the Church to become heretical and idolatrous”. But the Ngong Hills presbytery, under which he worked, met on Saturday at the Githima Church, Dagoretti, and asked him to reconsider his decision to quit, seeing he had served only half of his 40-year entitlement. The 46-year-old clergyman – whose sermons have triggered sharp controversies was speaking to pressmen after morning service at St Andrew’s Church, Nairobi.
