Description

August 24, 2004: Ezekiel Kemboi leads teammates Brimin Kipruto and Paul Koech in a clean harvest of medals in the 3,000 meters steeplechase at the Athens Olympics. In the process he earned Kenya the first gold medal of the games setting in motion nationwide celebrations. Ezekiel Kemboi won gold, Brimin Kipruto the silver and Paul Koech the bronze. It was the first Kenyan clean sweep since 1992 when Mathew Birir, Patrick Sang and William Mutwol crossed the line in that order in Barcelona. Here, Vice-President Moody Awori with medalists Isabella Ochichi (right), Catherine Ndereba (second left) and Ezekiel Kemboi (left) at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport after Kenya’s Olympics team arrived from Athens August 31, 2004.
