January 20, 1994: Ford Kenya Chairman Jaramogi Oginga Odinga dies at Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu. He collapsed in his house at 5.30 pm where his personal physician, Dr. Odhiambo Olel, rushed to attend to him at 5.45 pm and took him to the Aga Khan Hospital in a critical condition. Upon arrival at the hospital, Mr. Odinga was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit where doctors frantically tried to resuscitate him. At 6.45 pm, Mr. Odinga, leader of the Opposition, was certified dead. The hospital’s resident physician, Dr. Feroz Alibhoy, told the Nation: “It is with deep regret and sorrow that we announce the sudden and unexpected demise of the honorable, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga whose immediate cause of death was diagnosed as cardiac arrest. By 10 pm, Jaramogi Odinga’s body was still lying at the hospital mortuary while the Nyanza Provincial Commissioner, Mr. Joseph Kaguthi, Ford-K lawyer James Orengo and members of Mr. Odinga’s family were holding a closed-door meeting in the hospital boardroom. Hospital sources told the Nation that the PC and Jaramogi’s family were discussing funeral and other arrangements before they could issue a substantive press statement.
