September 27, 1985: Kitui West MP Maluki Kitili Mwendwa dies in a car crash on the Nairobi-Thika highway. Mwendwa had been a permanent secretary, acting attorney-general and solicitor-general when he became Kenya’s first African Chief Justice on July 3, 1968.
