September 14, 1966: President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta says the idea of a common monetary area as a counterpart to the Common Market has not been abandoned, He said it when he opened the Central Bank of Kenya in Nairobi. Addressing guests who had gathered to witness the official opening in Lieut. Tumbo Avenue the President said that the chain of events leading to the break-up of the East African Currency were well known and had been discussed before. “On this occasion,” he said. “I intend to turn my thoughts to the future.” ‘ Discussions between the three East African governments were still going on with an aim to strengthening East African co-operation in other fields.
